They made a real difference at our school exhibitions last year, and they're still making a difference now.\r\n\r\nExhibitions can be a big, busy, overwhelming event, and for many of my students with IEPs, it's the kind of day they'd normally sit out. Face painting changed that. It gave students a clear, hands-on role with a simple routine: greet a visitor, help them choose a design, ask permission, and paint. Students who usually hang back at whole-school events were right in the middle of the action. One student who had skipped previous exhibitions not only showed up but ran the face painting table for most of the afternoon, chatting with visitors and proudly showing off his designs. Watching him connect with peers and adults he'd never talked to before was one of the highlights of my year.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were so excited. They immediately started practicing on their own hands and arms, trading design ideas, and planning who would paint what. Having time to practice beforehand helped students who were nervous feel ready, so by exhibition day they felt confident and prepared.\r\n\r\nNext, we're getting ready for this year's exhibitions, and the face painting table is back! Returning students are stepping up as leaders and teaching new students the designs and routines. Along the way, they're building communication, independence, and self-confidence, and most importantly, they're feeling like a real part of our school community. It might seem like a small thing, but in my Learning Lab it has made a real difference. Many of my students come to class hungry, whether they skipped breakfast, had an early lunch, or are heading into a long afternoon. It's hard to focus on an essay or a math assignment when your stomach is growling, and for students who already work hard to manage attention and stress, hunger can be the thing that derails the whole period.\r\n\r\nNow, when a student walks in tired or a little off, I can offer a granola bar or some crackers, and within a few minutes they're ready to get to work. One afternoon, a student who had been putting off a big assignment for days grabbed a snack, sat down, and said, \"Okay, I can do this now.\" He finished the whole thing before the bell. Moments like that happen all the time now.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes first arrived, my students couldn't believe it. They kept asking, \"Wait, these are for us?\" Some of them helped unpack and organize everything into our snack bin, and they've taken real ownership of keeping it tidy and making sure everyone gets a fair share. It has quietly become part of our classroom community.\r\n\r\nNext, my students are working on study skills like organizing their assignments, tracking their grades, and planning ahead for semester finals. Having snacks on hand means they can stay focused through those longer work sessions, and it helps make our room a place where students feel cared for and ready to learn. Because of you all, Lincoln Basketball team received new gear, including team socks. The kids absolutely loved them. Every time we are able to build community for our students with disabilities, every one wins. \r\n\r\nNext steps for Lincoln unified is building more community connection. We are looking to work with UW, Seattle Storm and Seattle Univeristy.
