Before, we would use every window available to begin the MANY trays of seedlings. The windows have a ledge which is great, but the heat vents are built into the ledge. So, the inconsistent sunlight and the heat (or lack of heat when it gets turned off in the spring) causes great stress for growing plants. Now, the Garden Club can use the heat mats and grow lights to produce healthier seedlings. We used them late this spring to produce a wonderful crop of Blue Cream Berry tomatoes. These have been a BIG hit with staff and students. When classes visit the garden, these are one of the little treats they can pick and eat off the vine. Picture books allow my students to practice important reading skills such as identifying the main idea and key details, determining character traits, identifying theme, making inferences, summarizing, comparing characters and texts, and supporting their thinking with evidence. Because the texts are shorter and supported by illustrations, students can focus on the skill we are learning rather than feeling overwhelmed by a large amount of text. They are able to slow down, think deeply, discuss their ideas, and practice the same sophisticated reading skills they will use with longer texts.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is about building both strong readers and a genuine love of reading. My students are always excited to see new books added to our classroom library, and picture books give every student an opportunity to successfully engage with a text. The illustrations also provide another way for students to make predictions, notice details, infer meaning, and think about how the pictures and words work together. This is especially valuable for students who may need a little extra support or confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books are helping my third graders discover what it means to find a book that speaks to them. Some students are drawn to funny stories, while others love animals, mysteries, fantasy, or books that connect to their own experiences. They are learning that reading is not just something we do for an assignment. It can be a way to laugh, wonder, learn, and see the world from someone else's perspective. They could not wait to try the different seating options and immediately began sharing which ones they thought would help them learn best. It has been wonderful to see students recognize what they need to be successful and make thoughtful choices about their learning environment.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using our flexible seating during independent reading, writing, and small-group activities. One of my favorite moments has been watching a student who sometimes has difficulty sitting still find a wobble cushion that allows them to move while remaining focused on their work. Moments like this remind me that sometimes a small change in the learning environment can make a big difference for a child.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, my students will be using these resources during a variety of lessons and collaborative projects.
