This realistic fiction book touched on the following themes: friendship, family struggles, coming-of-age, identity and belonging. The students really enjoyed reading this heart-felt and sometimes funny story. \r\n\r\nThey worked in small groups to analyze different literary elements such as: story plot, conflicts, characters and their motives. They also learned how to use different strategies to identify and define new vocabulary words, as well as learn how to use the new vocabulary in context. In addition, students participated in small group discussions where they shared their responses to different reading tasks pertaining to different themes of the book.\r\n\r\nThe students were actively engaged in reading this book, so I have decided to begin this upcoming school year with it, as well. This is an area that many of my kids struggle, so this was an approachable way for them to learn.
