I began my book club unit with a book tasting. For this lesson, students were given time to \"taste test\" the book. They began by examining the cover art and reading the description on the back cover. They then were given a \"golden section\" of the book to read independently for five minutes. After that, I showed them a book trailer of the book. Students then rated their book before moving on to the next text to sample. At the end of class, I had students choose their first and second choice for book clubs.\r\n\r\nEach day, we spend the first ten minutes of class independently reading. For their weekly assignment, students write down four major plot points, find three new vocabulary words, and choose a key quote from the text. Each week, they meet with their group to discuss the text and brainstorm writing ideas for a key question. Last week's question was, \"What major conflict or theme is introduced in the beginning of the novel?\" After their discussion, students then wrote their own analysis of this question.\r\n\r\nEven more exciting, I have parents wanting to read along with their child! My students came home after the book tasting talking about their choice and exciting their parents about reading. Now this is an amazing development! \r\n\r\nIt is much easier to initiate book clubs than you think. I am able to create generic tasks that apply to all texts. I believe this shows students that there is value in everything we read. They are not just searching for answers, but thinking deeply about their text. I would never have been able to do this project without the support of my donors.
