As we unrolled the large gathering rug in the center of the room, the students actually cheered and immediately asked to test out how soft it was. This rug has completely transformed the physical environment of our room, giving us a true, comfortable center to anchor our day. The smaller rug was placed perfectly in our library, and it instantly made the space the most popular spot in the room during our independent reading blocks.\r\n\r\nWe use the large rug every single morning to build our collaborative classroom community. Just this past week, we gathered on the rug to sit in a wide circle and discuss what it means to practice good citizenship. Because our room blends general and special education students, having everyone sitting together on equal, comfortable footing allowed every single voice to be heard and valued. The absolute surprise hit of the project, however, has been the manual carpet sweeper. The students treat using it like a reward. We added a sweeper role to our weekly classroom jobs, and they take immense pride in pushing it across the rugs to keep our shared space beautiful at the end of the day.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these wonderful resources will continue to support our daily academic goals. Right now, our class is working hard on mastering math fluency within 100 and recognizing VCe long vowel sounds. The large rug gives us the perfect open area to play interactive math games, allowing partner pairs to spread out comfortably with their manipulatives instead of being confined to desks. During our phonics lessons, we gather close on the rug for accountable talk, letting the students quickly turn and face a neighbor to practice their new vocabulary.
