Your generosity has provided my students with access to calculators that have quickly become an essential part of their daily learning experience.\r\n\r\nThese calculators are being used every day by students across a wide range of mathematical abilities in both Probability & Statistics Honors and Math for College Liberal Arts (MCLA). The students in these courses come with varying levels of mathematical confidence and experience, yet each student is expected to engage with rigorous calculations, analyze data, interpret statistical results, and apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations. Having reliable technology readily available allows them to focus less on becoming overwhelmed by the mechanics of complex calculations and more on understanding what the mathematics means and why their answer makes sense.\r\n\r\nIn Probability & Statistics Honors, students rely heavily on the calculators to perform the rigorous statistical computations required throughout the course. The technology allows them to independently work through complex problems, analyze data, and verify their calculations while developing the procedural fluency and critical-thinking skills necessary for success in statistics.\r\n\r\nIn MCLA, the calculators serve an equally important but sometimes different purpose. While students may use them to complete required calculations, most are frequently used as a checking tool. Students can independently verify their work, identify mistakes, and gain confidence in their mathematical reasoning. For students who may have historically struggled with mathematics, that ability to check their work provides reassurance and creates a stronger, more supportive learning environment. Instead of immediately assuming that an answer is wrong because a calculation is difficult, students can use the technology to investigate, correct, and understand their mistakes.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your donation has helped create a classroom where students are able to participate fully and independently, regardless of their prior mathematical experiences. The calculators are not replacing mathematical thinking; they are helping remove unnecessary barriers so students can concentrate on reasoning, problem-solving, interpretation, and understanding. The Arduino Uno's that were donated have been getting so much use! We first reintroduced ourselves on how to coordinate and begin a project with the micro-controllers, but then each group of students really ran with their own projects and learned so much!\r\n\r\nOne group of students has been setting their sights as high as the stars, and has been working on an alternate to traditional launch systems for rockets! He has the arduino setup to control a wind tunnel he made all on his own! Students didn't just complete an assignment; they connected with their characters on a deeper level by creating personalized \"cell phones\" that reflected who those characters are and what their actual cell phones would look like. \r\n\r\nStudents thoughtfully, carefully, and deliberately brainstormed and researched their fictional book or movie characters before completion and really made this project come to life. Because of your donation, our classroom became a place where students felt safe to try, create, and express themselves. Your kindness made learned feel meaningful and personal. It helped students see that their ideas matter and that school can be a place where they belong and succeed. That kind of impact goes far beyond one project... instead it stays with them forever.
