As secondary teachers we were not trained initially for this so it has been quite a shift. I decided to start small and focus on the sounds and syllables and one way I thought to do that was with dictionaries. Most kids have never used a real dictionary so I knew I had my work cut out for me and braced myself for the moans and groans of 6th graders in having to do this. I've been building the idea up as I waited for my shipment and found kids start asking daily \"when are they coming? When can we use them?\" and I would just keep saying \"soon...soon...\" When they came, to my delight they were actually excited! They started looking through them before I could even talk about them. I purposefully did not order a full class set, I wanted them to work together and help each other find words to do their \"Dictionary Detective\" work and that is just what they did. I kept hearing \"I found it! I found it!\" as they started looking up the vocabulary words in the class novel we are reading.\r\n\r\nThe other books that we received were also a big hit as this group tends to be lower in reading so chapter books can be intimidating. Having a good selection of graphic novels opens the door for reluctant readers to read a whole novel and not be overwhelmed.
