We started our plants in a previously donated hydroponic system before the students learned how to transplant them into the soil system that we ended up growing our plants in. The kids are thrilled and enjoy watering the plants every day and we have a rotation of different students that have the opportunity to water them.\r\n\r\nWhile we have not seen any of our tomato plants go beyond the flower stage (yet) we were able to harvest a single bell pepper that my students were able to eat and try out. Last week Friday we took 185 students down to the beach for a day of celebration! These students received good grades (no Ds or Fs), demonstrated positive behaviors (no admin referrals), and completed 4 hours of community services for quarter 3. Their reward was called Leilani's Games n Grinds. The items purchased from Donors Choose allowed up to order supplies for games. We had 18 excited teams who participated in 8 different activities that build team work. The students enjoyment and smiles speak for themselves. Leilani's on the Beach donated the food. Your donation allowed up to purchase paper products to serve the students lunch. Overall it was an amazing day and an incredible opportunity for our students. Events like these help motivate them to receive good grades, feel a sense of belonging by giving back to their community and it promotes positive mental health. Without your donation this day would would not have been possible. One of my students is absolutely in love with the pizza Pete the Cat stuffed animal that was purchased and it has been instrumental in helping him work on transitioning around campus as this has been a challenge and finding motivators has been hard this year. This has been one of the biggest and most surprising things to have turned his transitions around and I am incredibly grateful we were able to get this donated.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the blackout curtains have allowed us to help our students with calming down when they have been dysregulated but reducing the amount of light into the room and allowing for a darker and more calm environment.
