This is my favorite unit to teach. It is sometimes very difficult to get my students to pick up, much less enjoy, a book. When we begin this unit, it starts with grumbles and shock that they will be expected to read the entire book! By the end, and after we have watched the movie, it ends with exclamations of \"the book was so much better\"! \r\nThroughout reading the novel, students get ot practice many literary skills, including analyzing a dystopian fiction, analyzing the theme, making inferences, analyzing character development, evidence-based writing, and vocabulary acquisition. After we read the book, students create a one-pager. There are a few pictured here. On the one-pager, they have to draw a picture in each box that represents something from the story. The students really enjoy this creative activity. They are all displayed in the hallway afterwards. After that, we watch the movie and write a compare-and-contrast essay about the two.\r\nThe students appreciated the new books because the old ones had clumps of pages falling out. Not due to anything other than age and use. My first lesson when we begin the unit is how to take care of and appreciate books. The students love this unit and end up loving the novel as well. Thanks to your generous donations, I will be able to continue this novel study for many years to come. Thank you from all of us.","fullyFundedDate":1773831595036,"projectUrl":"project/the-giver-novel-study/10120734/","projectTitle":"The Giver Novel Study","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ortiz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5830867"},{"teacherId":9567717,"projectId":9057617,"letterContent":"So many hands on projects were able to be completed with these items. Their reactions were full of surprise and excitement—many of them couldn't believe these items were just for them. The sunglasses, in particular, were a big hit. Several students immediately put them on and started striking playful poses, grinning from ear to ear. It was heartwarming to see such joy over something so simple yet meaningful.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the new books during our daily reading block, and they've added fresh energy to the classroom. One student started a mini book club with her friends to talk about a story they all loved. The sunglasses even made it into our writing time—we did a fun creative writing prompt where students imagined they were secret agents or movie stars thanks to their new shades. The snacks have been a steady comfort, especially during long afternoons. These donations created more than just moments of happiness—they've sparked creativity, focus, and a stronger sense of community in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1741703770127,"projectUrl":"project/snacks-and-good-reads/9143269/","projectTitle":"Snacks and Good Reads!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Masterman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8650497_orig.jpg?crop=541,541,x0,y221&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741633639050","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8650497"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_43122","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":397,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":90,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":24,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"3 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":61.2,"schoolId":43122,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about La Junta Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"La Junta Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/east-otero-school-district-r-1/la-junta-intermediate-school/43122"}
