The excitement these materials generate is immediate. As soon as students begin working with the pieces, they become curious about what they can build, how the marble will move, and what changes they can make to improve their designs.\r\n\r\nThe marble runs have made abstract science concepts much easier for my fifth-grade students to understand. Instead of only reading about force, motion, gravity, speed, and energy, students can observe these concepts in action. They experiment with the height and angle of ramps, compare different pathways, and examine how changes to a structure affect the marble's speed and direction. These hands-on experiences help students connect classroom vocabulary to something they can see, test, and explain.\r\n\r\nThe materials have also introduced students to the engineering design process in an authentic and age-appropriate way. Students begin with an idea, create a plan, build a model, test it, and identify areas that need improvement. Their first design does not always work as expected, but that becomes an important part of the learning experience. Rather than viewing an unsuccessful attempt as a failure, students learn to analyze the problem, make adjustments, and try again. They develop perseverance and begin to understand that revising a design is a normal and necessary part of engineering.\r\n\r\nThese marble runs have helped me create lessons that are more student-centered and inquiry-based. I can present students with challenges such as building the longest working marble run, creating a pathway with a specific number of turns, slowing the marble down, or designing a structure that allows the marble to reach a particular target. Students must apply science and math skills while also thinking creatively. They measure, compare, predict, observe, collect information, and communicate their findings. I am able to assess their understanding by listening to their conversations, observing their designs, and asking them to explain why they made certain changes.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts has been the growth I have seen in student collaboration. Students must share materials, listen to one another's ideas, divide responsibilities, and make group decisions. They practice respectfully disagreeing, explaining their reasoning, and combining ideas to create a successful design. The activity naturally provides leadership opportunities for students who may not always feel confident participating in a traditional lesson. Some students excel at planning, others at building, testing, troubleshooting, or explaining the group's thinking. Every student can contribute in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThe marble runs have also been especially beneficial for students who learn best through movement and hands-on exploration. These students are able to manipulate the pieces, immediately observe cause-and-effect relationships, and receive instant feedback from their designs. Because the activity feels like play, students often remain focused and persistent for longer periods of time. They are learning important academic concepts while developing confidence, independence, and a willingness to take thoughtful risks.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, I have been able to provide engaging STEM challenges that would not have been possible with our regular classroom supplies. Before receiving the cart, the television was permanently affixed to the wall directly above the whiteboard. Although the television was an important instructional tool, its location created several challenges. Because it was mounted over the whiteboard, it occupied a large amount of valuable instructional space and limited how much of the board I could use for teaching, modeling, displaying anchor charts, recording student ideas, and providing visual examples. It also made it difficult for students to view the screen comfortably from every area of the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe movable cart has allowed me to reclaim the whiteboard as a fully functional teaching space. I can now use the entire board to display daily learning targets, vocabulary, diagrams, worked examples, student thinking, and other important information. This is especially beneficial in science and social studies, where lessons often require diagrams, maps, timelines, data tables, and written observations. Having more whiteboard space allows information to remain visible throughout a lesson instead of being erased frequently to make room for something new. Students can refer to this information as they complete assignments, participate in discussions, and work collaboratively.\r\n\r\nThe cart has also made the television much more accessible to students. Rather than being limited to one fixed location, I can move the television to the area of the classroom where it will be most useful. During whole-group instruction, I can position it so that all students have a clear view. During small-group instruction, I can move it closer to the students who are working with me. I can also adjust its location when students are completing projects, giving presentations, viewing demonstrations, or participating in interactive digital activities. This flexibility helps reduce distractions and prevents students from having to strain, turn around, or move away from their workspaces to see the screen.\r\n\r\nBecause my students participate in many hands-on and collaborative learning experiences, the classroom arrangement often changes based on the needs of the lesson. Students may work at tables, rotate through science stations, conduct investigations, or gather in small groups. The movable television supports these different learning formats because the technology can move with us. Instead of designing every activity around the television's permanent location, I can arrange the classroom in a way that best supports the learning objective and then place the television where it is needed.\r\n\r\nThe cart has been especially valuable when showing science demonstrations, educational videos, digital models, maps, photographs, presentations, and student-created work. I can place the screen near an investigation so students can compare a digital example with what they are observing in front of them. I can also display directions and timers while keeping the whiteboard available for recording results or discussing student observations. This makes transitions smoother and helps students remain focused and independent.\r\n\r\nAnother important benefit is that the movable cart allows me to respond to students' different learning needs. Some students benefit from sitting closer to visual information, while others need fewer distractions or a different viewing angle. Being able to reposition the television helps ensure that all students can access instructional content more comfortably. It also allows me to create a more inclusive learning environment without requiring major changes to the classroom.\r\n\r\nOverall, placing the television on a movable cart has transformed it from a stationary device into a flexible instructional resource. It has freed valuable whiteboard space, improved visibility, supported small-group and whole-group instruction, and made it easier to incorporate technology into hands-on learning. Most importantly, it allows the classroom space to adapt to my students and the lesson rather than requiring every lesson to adapt to the television's location.
