By funding our choice book project, you have given my students one of the greatest gifts an educator can offer: the power to choose what they read. Having a vibrant, diverse library of choice books has completely transformed the energy and enthusiasm in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWhile teaching a single whole-class novel focuses on a shared story, teaching with choice books allows us to focus on universal, transferrable reading skills. Regardless of which book a student selects, they are learning how to: practice selecting books at their independent reading level, setting personal reading goals, and recognizing when a text is engaging versus when to pivot. Students are also building sustained focus by reading texts aligned with their personal passions, culture, and interests.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you walked into our room during reading time, you would see every student with a book they personally selected—from graphic novels and memoirs to fantasy epics and realistic fiction. Giving students ownership over their reading has lit a spark across our entire classroom, but the impact is especially profound for our reluctant readers and students who hadn't yet seen themselves reflected in our school library.\r\n\r\nBy providing access to books students want to read, you haven't just helped them practice reading—you've helped them see themselves as real readers.
