Their eyes went wide when they saw the big, soft MagnetBlox and the natural Branch Blocks. They immediately started touching the different textures and exploring what they could build.\r\n\r\nBoth set of blocks have become instant favorites during center time, especially when the kids bring in our mini plastic animals! One group loves using the MagnetBlox to build massive, cozy \"animal houses\" with big rooms. Right next to them, another group uses the smaller Branch Blocks to stack up natural habitats, tree towers, and jungle trails for the animals to climb. For four- and five-year-olds, seeing their physical button presses turn into real movement makes basic coding feel like magic. \r\n\r\nWe put Bee-Bot on a picture map filled with colorful icons. Our students were thrilled when they first saw the new materials and could not wait to get outside and explore them. The Lakeshore Giant Bug Collection has encouraged students to become little scientists as they observe, identify, sort, and compare different insects during outdoor play. The Green Toys fire truck, dump truck, and recycling truck have inspired imaginative play and conversations about community helpers, construction, safety, and caring for our environment. The KidKraft pretend play food set has also become a favorite, with students creating pretend restaurants, picnics, grocery stores, and meals while practicing sharing, communication, and cooperation.\r\n\r\nThe Battat Balancing Beams and stepping stones have added an exciting physical challenge to our outdoor play. Students use them to create their own obstacle courses, practice balance and coordination, and challenge themselves to try new movements. It has been wonderful to watch them work together, take turns, solve problems, and encourage their classmates. As we continue our classroom learning, we will keep using these materials to connect our lessons to hands-on outdoor experiences, giving students opportunities to explore nature, develop their physical skills, and expand their imaginative play. My 4- and 5-year-old students will be inventing, collaborating, testing ideas, and solving problems daily.
