We gave all of our garden beds and picnic tables a nice new coat of paint with the rollers and brushes we purchased. The upper elementary grades have engineered many different types of garden beds using a hybrid of traditional practices and modern materials purchased with your donation. \r\n\r\nThe upper grades are so grateful to finally have gloves that fit them. For example we used to have a hodge podge of ill fitting gloves not enough big ones for the older kids not enough small ones for the younger kids. Students were so excited about not having to scavenge through ill fitting crusting gloves and the 5th grade class even created an organizational system to keep the gloves nice and paired!\r\n\r\nStudents are making the garden abundant and cared for through the new materials. Students have planted flowers and are now collecting and saving the seeds, so the simple purchase of a pack of seeds can last for many classes of students and will even be used for our own seed sharing project. Students painted all of our new garden beds using the new paint supplies so they now match and look professional. The fifth grade class created signs for different plants including the many varieties of kalo we have. The sixth grade class used the various tools purchased by the project to create a planting area for awa, their classes hookupu offering to Lono during our Makahiki celebration. Some come to school early and, while they wait for the day to officially begin, they choose a game to play with a partner. \r\n\r\nBecoming fluent in basic math skills is a must for grades 4-6, and games are a great way to do that. If you know this age, you know they are competitive as well, so getting the highest score, or being the one with the most cards in the end is their focus. If they are learning along the way, that is a win for us all. \r\n\r\nMost of my students had never played many of these games and didnʻt think they would be very good at them. Once they learned how, they now jump at the chance to get to play together.
