Thanks to these resources, the sheer variety of projects students have tackled is remarkable. Using the shears and super glue, students mastered coconut leaf weaving to create functional plates and intricate baskets. We also utilized the colored paper to explore the concepts of positive and negative space in traditional 'ohe kāpala designs—a lesson that evolved into students crafting their own authentic bamboo stamps using sandpaper.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable experiences was a study of fish anatomy and adaptations. Using sumi ink and real invasive species from the ocean, students created Japanese fish prints, allowing them to hypothesize hunting behaviors based on the physical details they observed. We also used the large format paper and paints for a 3D cube project that brought 'Ōlelo No'eau (Hawaiian proverbs) to life. Lastly, our place-based Mauna project combined geology and volcanology with fine art, as students created mountain-inspired pieces modeled after Hokusai's Views of Mount Fuji. Your generosity has provided more than just supplies; it has deepened our students' connection to their identity and environment.","fullyFundedDate":1771533447671,"projectUrl":"project/rooting-student-identity-through-hawaiia/10104665/","projectTitle":"Rooting Student Identity through Hawaiian Arts","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. White","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9969487"},{"teacherId":10313411,"projectId":10108727,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding my first DonorsChoose. My students were able to build free-standing towers out of specific materials and then compete to see who built the tallest. They loved the catapult project, and they were able to make two different models and work together to problem-solve.\r\n\r\nThe great thing about project-based learning is that it allows for different students to shine. In fact, one of the students who made the best catapult is a consistent 'D' student. However, he loved this project and received an A on it. He isn't the best at taking tests, but he is great at problem-solving, and this project allowed him to shine.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, we had a storm before we were able to build the solar cars, and the storm damaged the school so badly that we are currently teaching remotely until it is repaired. Our school was ordered to shut down on Friday, March 13th—the day before spring break—I left this MacBook Air in my classroom, expecting to return on that Friday, the day before the break. None of us anticipated that the school would close due to severe flooding over that weekend.\r\n\r\nWhat Happened to This Equipment:\r\n\r\nThe MacBook Air was left in a box on the classroom floor before this storm hit over that weekend. When I returned for the materials retrieval and sorting day at our gym, the box was not among the recovered items. Given the extent of the floodwaters that inundated our building over March 14-15th, I must assume the laptop was lost in the flooding.\r\n\r\nI have documented this loss in our school's damaged goods spreadsheet as part of our official storm damage inventory (due to health and safety concerns, we have not been able to return to our campus).\r\n\r\nThe Broader Impact on Our Students:\r\n\r\nSince the flooding, Konawaena High School has remained closed, and our students have been in distance learning for the remainder of the school year. This MacBook Air represents more than just lost equipment—it represents the disruption our entire school community has experienced.\r\n\r\nOur Gratitude:\r\n\r\nThank you for your generous donation of this essential classroom resource. Reading in our room is no longer a solitary, passive task; it has become a vibrant, shared experience. We often engage in \"Socratic Seminars\" where students lead the discussion, grappling with the book's heavy themes of social inequality and media influence. Seeing every student with their own physical copy has created a sense of equity and pride, allowing us to annotate together and dive deep into the text without the barrier of shared or digital screens.\r\n\r\nBeyond the excitement of the plot, these novels serve as a powerful tool for teaching critical analysis and civic empathy. We are using Katniss Everdeen's journey to explore complex literary concepts like the \"Anti-Hero\" and the use of symbolism in political propaganda. Students aren't just reading for the \"what\"—they are investigating the \"why,\" looking at how the author uses the setting of Panem to mirror real-world issues. This has been particularly impactful for my students who previously struggled to connect with traditional \"classics.\" They are now staying after the bell rings to debate character choices, showing a level of engagement and sophisticated thought that proves how the right book can unlock a student's potential.","fullyFundedDate":1746785559228,"projectUrl":"project/buy-a-class-set-of-novels-the-hunger-ga/9254592/","projectTitle":"Buy a Class Set of Novels: The Hunger Games","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carhart","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9357542_orig.jpg?crop=2079,2079,x0,y166&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1771534460529","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9357542"},{"teacherId":515141,"projectId":10046610,"letterContent":"Mahalo for helping us to get the supplies we need to have a thriving raised bed garden and being able to grow many different things that we eat, cook and share with others.
