We chatted about books they already loved, a series that was missing the rest after the first book, and their interests when it came to reading. That means that when this project was funded and we got the books into the classroom, there was a huge shift in our independent reading time. Students cheered every time I opened a box and there was a book that they had asked for. Books were devoured, shared, and have been so loved in their new home. \r\nIn a place where it is hard to get access to the new and latest, my students finally had something that not only belonged to them completely, but they were new in their condition as well. What a rare and wonderful treat it was for us. This project has enabled my students choice in their reading time, which has given them the love of reading for the sake of it. They read all the time, even during free periods like snack or lunch - and the pride I have for them is immense. We continue to make giant strides in their reading and testing scores because of this project. These books are relevant, fun, and student approved. They will be loved and read over and over for many years to come . Once we got the boxes, we did a 'book tasting' - which allowed students to sample read books for a few minutes at a time before switching groups to try out the other books. Their eyes lit up with excitement as they saw fresh titles come into our classroom. Their personal book bins, and hearts, are full. \r\nAs the school year continued, we used the books during our classroom IditaRead, an Alaskan themed book reading challenge that follows the annual Iditarod. Students were reading these books everywhere, all of the time - before school, during snack break, while waiting for the bus, you name it. \r\nThe books have given them the chance to enjoy what they read and practice the skills over and over again. I have seen not only an increase in their love for reading, but their test scores as well. We have had students who have been in the 99th percentile for reading testing growth this spring. It is all because of donors like you, that we have such a class of strong readers. My words will never be enough, but we are so grateful for the words on the pages of our new books. The students and this school are very low income, and sometimes in years past it has felt like they were not getting the education they deserve when they showed up to school, due to a low/non existent science budget. This year on the other hand, there was a feeling of importance when the students stepped into the classroom—they were excited, engaged, and curious as to what we would be getting into each day. With this project, we have been able to start an after school art club that provides our students with all the needed materials to create their masterpieces. Each week, students meet and work on projects while learning foundational art skills. We've worked on learning the color wheel, different types of lines, and have worked to share our art by making art for community events and helping with decorations. \r\n\r\nIn addition to that, we have been able to use our materials to integrate art into the general education classroom. Students have used clay to make maps of Alaska, paint to create landscapes, and more! These art connections have soldified their understandings and made the learning more hands-on. We could not have had any of these opportunities without this project being completed! We are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts.
