The 3rd-grade students I worked with were beyond excited to receive these books for our novel study of Because of Winn-Dixie.\r\n\r\nThere is something powerful about each student having their own book in hand during lessons rather than simply listening to it read aloud or sharing with a partner. With their own copy to follow along, they can engage with the text more deeply- tracking the story, revisiting their favorite parts, and building confidence as readers. This shared experience helps students feel more connected to the novel while also creating a sense of community in the classroom, as we journey through the story together.\r\n\r\nThese classroom copies of books have opened the door to teaching a wide range of reading skills and life lessons. Academically, we used the novel to practice comprehension strategies such as making predictions, identifying character traits, and tracking cause-and-effect relationships. We also had an opportunity to study vocabulary in context and explore themes through writing and discussion. Because of Winn-Dixie naturally lends itself to conversations about kindness, empathy, and friendship, helping students see how books can teach us about both reading and life. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generous donation and for supporting our readers. You've given them both the tools and the inspiration to grow as learners.","fullyFundedDate":1741585361304,"projectUrl":"project/what-a-novel-idea-for-reading/9148591/","projectTitle":"What a Novel Idea for Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Scoggin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6404943_orig.jpg?crop=445,445,x0,y37&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1596839801996","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lisa-scoggin"},{"teacherId":1109000,"projectId":8331411,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our butterfly pavilion project! Because of you, my second graders were able to experience the magic of the butterfly life cycle up close and personal — an experience that deepened their understanding of science and sparked incredible curiosity and joy.\r\n\r\nWhen the butterfly pavilion and caterpillars first arrived, our classroom buzzed with excitement! The students could hardly contain their enthusiasm as we carefully unpacked the pavilion and tiny caterpillar cups. Many students gasped in amazement, and some had never seen live caterpillars before. One student exclaimed, \"They're so small now — I can't believe they'll turn into butterflies!\" The moment was full of wonder and gratitude.\r\n\r\nAs the days passed, the students became devoted observers, documenting each stage of the life cycle in their science journals. Giving the caterpillars names helped the children form a personal connection to the project and made each stage of transformation even more meaningful.\r\n\r\nFinally, the day came when we released the butterflies. Watching them take flight brought cheers and a few happy tears. The experience taught my students about life cycles, patience, observation, and empathy.\r\n\r\nThanks to this project, my students now see themselves as young scientists. Our next steps include continuing our study of life cycles with plants and insects found in our local environment. We will be planting milkweed and other pollinator-friendly plants in our school garden, so the students can observe and support butterflies and other pollinators right in our own schoolyard.\r\n\r\nYour contribution didn't just provide a butterfly pavilion — it created lasting memories, inspired young minds, and connected children to the natural world.
