As educators and advocates for student success, it is crucial to recognize the transformative role that access to books in their native language can play in their academic and personal growth.\r\n\r\nSeeing the excitement in our ELL learners faces when they find current, popular books in their native language is something I cherish. I love that I was able to provide this for them!\r\n\r\nBy purchasing Spanish language books, we are not only enriching our school library but also creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for ELL students. As a 28-year veteran teacher, I can't tell you how many times I've had to scrimp and save in order to bring new materials into my classroom. While there's an occasional grant opportunity to purchase materials, they often don't fit my needs and don't prove useful to me. So receiving this Donors Choose funding was a blessing this year.\r\nI've found that student motivation to read not only classroom-assigned texts but also independent-choice books has diminished over the years. I stock a classroom library with books I've purchased new or used, and even include discard-labeled books from our public library. The funding I received from you enabled me to buy 14 new non-fiction and fiction books related to the outdoors, survival, and the wilderness. These books are of high interest to my students because we live in Montana and many of my students actively participate in outdoor experiences. In addition, I introduced these books to my students when I launched a Native American novel unit this year; the novel related to people trying to survive in harsh conditions in the Alaskan wilderness (which is quite similar in many ways to our own area).\r\nIn addition, you funded a new classroom set of Beowulf prose editions to read in conjunction with the epic poem I teach my students. We'll be using these new texts in the spring to compare with the poem and will analyze the differences in text style and purpose.","fullyFundedDate":1726514234867,"projectUrl":"project/increasing-middle-schoolers-interest-in/8699942/","projectTitle":"Increasing Middle Schoolers' Interest in Reading Great Stuff!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gottschlich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9705161"},{"teacherId":9693197,"projectId":8682616,"letterContent":"The donation of books has made a significant impact on my students. Students are excited to come into class and dive into a story for the first five minutes. Not only is it a relaxing way to begin class, but students also know the expectations: come into class, get comfy, and open your book for five minutes. \r\n\r\nStudents who struggle with reading are the most excited about this new routine. They are gaining confidence and a joy for reading. I teach science, so all the books donated are science-based. This has created higher-level thinking skills and real-life applications. \r\n\r\nThe book we are currently reading, \"The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind,\" has created a lot of discussion about engineering creatively and everyday hardship. Reading the first five minutes of class has improved the overall environment in my classes.","fullyFundedDate":1724372970751,"projectUrl":"project/the-daily-300/8682616/","projectTitle":"The Daily 300","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Berget","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9693197"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78425","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1023,"numTeachers":68,"percentFrplEligible":45,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":86,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":70.6,"schoolId":78425,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kalispell Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kalispell Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/kalispell-public-school-district-5/kalispell-middle-school/78425"}
