Special education students need access to rich, high-interest texts. Most special education students are reluctant to read texts that are lower level because they are not age-appropriate. Access to rich, high-interest texts helps special education students engage in the learning process. Having printed materials will also help students access readings while at home. Scholastic magazine has done a wonderful job of aligning its texts to the content standards we are studying in class. We are working on developing reading skills and identifying evidence to support a question/claim, CCST language arts: reading literature 6.1. This stand also helps support skills in other content areas, and by having access to high-interest texts, my special education students should feel as though they can access the same information as their peers. These resources will also help the student improve their compression scores. With Scholastic magazines, students will be able to access rich texts that pique the interest of their age group. Students will also be able to learn about current events, mathematics, and science in a new format. Some students have never read or seen a magazine, so introducing them to this media will be something new for them.
