Many of our students learn best through hands-on activities, repetition, and visual supports. By laminating picture cards, communication boards, visual schedules, first/then boards, matching activities, number and letter cards, task strips, and other instructional materials, we can use them over and over again. This helps students build independence and gives them consistent opportunities to practice important academic, communication, social, and daily living skills. The technology may seem simple, but it allows us to turn paper materials into tools that can withstand frequent handling and support learning throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nWhat is most exciting to our students is seeing familiar learning activities become something they can touch, manipulate, and use independently. Students especially enjoy activities such as matching pictures, identifying letters and numbers, sequencing events, making choices, and following visual directions. Several of our students who are minimally verbal or nonverbal have especially warmed to these materials because they provide a clear way to communicate choices and demonstrate what they know. Students who may struggle to respond verbally can point, match, select, or manipulate a laminated card to participate successfully. We have been using the pre-cut paper squares, fidget pop-it, pom-poms, and large ink pads for hands-on fine-motor and early learning activities. One of their favorite activities has been using the pom-poms and ink pads to create colorful patterns and designs on the paper. The pop-it squares have also added a fun sensory element while helping students practice finger strength and coordination.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were immediately curious and excited. They couldn't wait to touch and explore everything! Their excitement turned into focused learning as they discovered different ways to use the materials.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue incorporating these resources into our literacy, math, and fine-motor centers. One of my favorite moments was watching a student who was becoming overwhelmed choose to use the calming area and sensory tools. With support, the student was able to regulate, calm their body, and return to learning. Creating 3D projects and working with their hands is always a hit, building their confidence as they realize they can make gratifying sculptures out of balls of clay. \r\n\r\nEach grade level learned about a people from around the world: their environment, their culture, their art, their customs, and their favorite foods. Then each student created food sculptures inspired by their lessons. Pre-K studied the people of Fuji and used their model magic to create ika vakalolo (fish with citrus and coconut sauce. Kinder studied the people of South Africa and used their clay to create braai with roosterkoek (grilled meat and veggies with grilled bread). 2nd grade studied the origins of food eaten by the people of the United States and used their model magic to create Dutch apple pie slices under a woven paper crust. Our special education students also studied the people of the United States and used clay to create hot dogs on buns from Austria with mustard and chocolate chip cookies from Persia after learning their countries of origin.\r\n\r\nWith the clay, students first learned the history of foods for different cultures. Then, they learned how to use slab and coil techniques to create art from clay. As they added marker to create different colors and values, they saw color mixing come to life. All the while, they were exercising those fine motor skills- which is a life long endeavor that is critical to begin at this formative time in their educational career.\r\n\r\nWe will be continuing to create clay, paper, and fabric sculptures throughout all our grades next year, experimenting with neon supplies and how they react with black lights to create a glow in the dark art exhibition.\r\n\r\nYour generous contribution and heart for education has made all this learning with my students possible.
