When I made this project, I did not think it would get attention among the other amazing projects that were posted. As a first-year teacher, I came into my job with great aspirations and a bit nervous to teach a group of 5 to 6-year-olds. This is such a crucial and delicate age for children who are starting school for the first time, so I knew I wanted to provide a calm and safe classroom environment from day one. One of the tools that could help me accomplish this was fidgets. I remembered the anxiety I myself felt as a kid who did not speak English at the beginning of my Kindergarten year. Having fidgets available in the classroom had the potential to alleviate those negative feelings for my own students. \r\n\r\nI remember introducing the donations to my class, and I can tell you all of my students were bouncing with excitement! Although I had to blur my students' faces in the pictures, I hope you can tell that they were smiling. The use of fidgets has allowed my students to show compassion for their peers who feel sad, nervous, anxious, or afraid. They now make sure to check on eachother and will often say, \"___ is ___ today, save a fidget for them.\" Moreover, we got excited about the addition of books to our classroom library! Whenever I have the chance, I will read to my students as they lie down on the mat. They love to ask questions, make predictions, and have discussions about the beautiful illustrations. Thank you for providing the tools for me to teach my students how to be kind, compassionate, and imaginative individuals.","fullyFundedDate":1755203424899,"projectUrl":"project/wiggles-and-words-building-calm-and-min/9460728/","projectTitle":"Wiggles and Words: Building Calm and Mindful Children","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vidal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10078149_orig.png?crop=949,949,x0,y151&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752396328534","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10078149"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55225","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":882,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":86,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":96,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"21.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.2,"schoolId":55225,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Juan Pacifico Ontiveros Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Juan Pacifico Ontiveros Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/santa-maria-bonita-school-dist/juan-pacifico-ontiveros-school/55225"}
