Reading may look like independent reading time, whole group reading, partner work, or literary activities related to reading. Next school year, I can provide more choices for students to complete activities, projects or other assignments with these titles. \r\n\r\nStudents enjoyed seeing the new titles arrive as I unboxed them during English class. They are excited to see more graphic novels added to our collection and to have new books to peruse. I searched the school library and many public libraries in the neighborhood to find many copies of the text, however I just couldn't find enough copies to fulfill a class set. When I first found this title, I read the book cover-to-cover and I just knew it would resonate with my students and their unique experiences. \r\n\r\nMy students are beginner level English language learners, so they work really hard to understand the language in all of their academic subjects. During the last quarter of the school year, my goal is always to read an entire book with them, so that they realize that they can read and understand a full book in English. I want them to build confidence in their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and this book helped by doing just that. While we were reading this book, students were able to understand characters and character traits, and analyze characters' actions. They were also introduced to the concept of a memoir, as this novel study took them into the life of the author and what she experienced herself at a young age. Then, my students were able to make connections to the main character and their own lives, as immigrants living in the United States.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading looks like some students reading ahead silently on their own, and others listening to me read the story aloud. A few of my students actually preferred to hear the story read to them, so that they could concentrate on the meaning versus spending so much time on understanding the words. \r\n\r\nOne student in particular asked me with excitement if she could have a copy of the book to take home and read more. She expressed that after reading the first two chapters in class, she wanted to start reading even more books like this (graphic novels). She wanted to immediately head down to the school library to find similar books to read at home at her leisure. This gave me so much joy!\r\n\r\nIn addition to the students' enjoyment and feedback, a parent reinforced the idea that I chose a great book for the class to read as she really felt like her son, and all of the students in my class, could really relate to the material and take an interest in the book. This parent was especially happy that the book would continue to introduce new words and more vocabulary into her son's \"toolbox.\" I cannot express enough how much this donation helped my students' understanding of key reading concepts and we are so grateful to platforms like Donors Choose and donors like you for helping this come to life.
