Your support has truly made a difference in my classroom and the lives of my 7th-grade science students.\r\n\r\nWith your donation, we received gummy worms, life savers, and clear plastic cups, all essential items for this hands-on team-building and problem-solving activity. While these items may seem simple, they provided the foundation for an engaging and memorable experience that brought science concepts to life in a way that no textbook could.\r\n\r\n\"Saving Fred\" challenged my students to work collaboratively to rescue a gummy worm named Fred, who \"fell out of his boat\" (a plastic cup) and needed to get his life preserver (the candy lifesaver) back on without anyone touching the objects directly with their hands. The only tools they could use were paperclips! This task required critical thinking, communication, and perseverance—skills that are essential both in science and in life.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stands out to me is when two of my students, Jayia and Emily, struggled at first to coordinate their efforts. After a few failed attempts, they paused, discussed a new strategy, and cheered together when they finally succeeded. Watching them light up with pride in their teamwork and problem-solving abilities was absolutely priceless. Another student, Jordan, who often hesitates to speak up during group work, took on a leadership role, guiding his team with calm and clear instructions. Seeing him thrive in this setting was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nBeyond the fun and excitement, this activity also allowed us to delve deeper into discussions about the scientific method, trial and error, and the importance of persistence. It was amazing to see my students draw connections between their experiences with \"Fred\" and the work of real scientists who face challenges and adapt their approaches to solve problems.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, my students not only learned valuable science skills but also grew in confidence and collaboration. These are lessons that will stay with them long after they leave my classroom. Your generosity has had a tangible and lasting impact, and for that, I am deeply grateful.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for believing in my students and in the power of hands-on learning. You have made a world of difference, and we will always remember your kindness.","fullyFundedDate":1731538309259,"projectUrl":"project/saving-fred/8676687/","projectTitle":"Saving Fred","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lewis-Christian","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9689459"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1376","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1026,"numTeachers":59,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.9,"schoolId":1376,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John R Griffin Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John R Griffin Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/cumberland-county-schools/john-r-griffin-middle-school/1376"}
