Students can choose the spot where they feel most comfortable and focused. It also serves as our primary play space area where the new activity toys come out.\r\n\r\nThe diverse and cultural people toys are integrated into our dramatic play and block centers. This has been a powerful tool for teaching acceptance and understanding. Students are naturally drawn to the different skin tones and disabilities represented, leading to organic, positive conversations about how we are all unique.\r\n\r\nThe cubbies are critical for developing executive function skills. Students now have easy access to their activity trays and learning tools, which has cut down on transition time and fostered a sense of ownership over their learning materials.\r\n\r\nA Specific Classroom Moment\r\nThe biggest impact has been during our free-choice time. I noticed two students, Maria and Ethan, who previously struggled to play together, naturally gravitate to the new rug. They were using the diverse people toys to act out a family scene. Ethan, who usually only picks one type of doll, started telling Maria, \"This one is the mom, and she needs her wheelchair to go to the store!\" It was a spontaneous moment where a toy that represented a disability was normalized and included in their narrative. This showed me the materials are doing exactly what we hoped—building empathy and understanding simply through play.","fullyFundedDate":1742839545250,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-foundation-for-a-bright-futur/9168345/","projectTitle":"Building a Foundation for a Bright Future!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ahrens","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9968167_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742749215740","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9968167"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27542","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":818,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":55,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":33,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"24.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":83.4,"schoolId":27542,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John Muir Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John Muir Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/glendale-unified-school-district/john-muir-elementary-school/27542"}
