My students are second-language learners from various ethnicities and we are located in a part of the city where almost 75% qualify for free and reduced lunch. I teach in a split class and I have both 4th and 5th graders who are working hard to meet established Common Core grade-level standards. My students are just like any others-inquisitive, intelligent, capable, and willing to take on the challenges of the curriculum because they understand the importance of acquiring knowledge and the necessary skills to be better prepared for their futures. My goal is to provide for them yet another means to gain the necessary skills to be 21st-century learners. Our school has about 900 students and we have also have a Spanish Dual Immersion program providing education in Spanish for a segment of our population.
