When a student needs support, materials are provided discreetly so they can address hygiene needs in the moment and also take items home to build consistent routines with their families. These resources have allowed staff, the school nurse, and families to work together to support students' physical well-being in a way that is respectful, private, and empowering.\r\n\r\nAt first, many students were understandably shy, but they were also visibly relieved and appreciative. Having these items available normalized conversations around hygiene and helped students feel supported rather than singled out. Over time, students became more comfortable knowing help was available when they needed it.\r\n\r\nThe next steps include a health and hygiene unit, with a particular focus on our 5th grade students as they prepare for middle school. Lessons will address personal care, body changes during puberty, and healthy routines—especially important as students become more active in sports and extracurricular activities. These resources will continue to reinforce learning beyond the classroom and support students in developing lifelong habits tied to confidence, wellness, and self-respect.","fullyFundedDate":1767820146819,"projectUrl":"project/helping-students-stay-healthy-with-hygie/9698236/","projectTitle":"Helping students stay healthy with hygiene support at school","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kuzniewski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10248470"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27538","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":653,"numTeachers":46,"percentFrplEligible":39,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":63,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":89.3,"schoolId":27538,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John Mills Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John Mills Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/elmwood-park-community-unit-school-district-401/john-mills-elementary-school/27538"}
