They then modeled the rock cycle.\r\n\r\nDuring all of this lovely, hands-on learning, the Science Comic books were widely circulated. At this point, almost all of my students have read them. When we wrote a research report on rocks, they knew exactly where to find facts in the comic books!\r\n\r\nThese materials really helped bring our geology unit to life. As a result, students had more fun learning and are more likely to retain their new knowledge. Each afternoon, when we are cleaning up, a few students take time to organize all our colors. This time has become a calm and engaging routine where students can relax, reset, and fully immerse themselves in a shared story before diving back into the rest of the school day.\r\n\r\nWe are currently reading The Chronicles of Narnia, and it has completely captured the students' imagination. One of the biggest skills we've been focusing on is making predictions. Students are constantly using clues from the text, character actions, and patterns in the story to predict what will happen next. They are learning how to explain why they think something will happen, not just what they think will happen, which has strengthened their ability to use evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nAlongside prediction, students are also practicing inferencing, understanding symbolism, and analyzing character choices, especially as the story moves between different worlds and introduces unexpected events. The fantasy elements of Narnia make it especially rich for discussion because students are always trying to figure out what is real, what might be symbolic, and what could happen next.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is very interactive. It includes read-alouds, stopping for discussion, partner conversations, and quick written responses. Students often turn and talk after a suspenseful moment or a major reveal, which leads to some of their most thoughtful and excited conversations. There is a strong sense of shared curiosity as everyone tries to piece the story together.\r\n\r\nOur 5th graders, in particular, are absolutely loving Narnia. They are especially engaged during prediction moments, often raising their hands immediately to share theories or debating different possibilities with each other. Many of them see it like a mystery they are solving together, and they are eager to see whose predictions come true. We are truly enjoying these electricity-focused resources! By far, the biggest hit is the snap-circuits kits. Students are clamoring for an opportunity to explore with these kits. Each time someone successfully builds a new circuit, the class celebrates. They love setting off alarms, making music play, and spinning the fan across the room. A group of boys was especially excited to make their circuit include a cup of water and prove that electricity does, indeed, travel through water. \r\n\r\nStudents have also used the fresh supply of copper tape and light bulbs to add circuits to their lego creations. They've turned math-game time into a full blown maker space. It's so exciting for me to watch them explore and learn through these supplies. I promise, if I'd tried to teach circuitry with nothing but our textbook, they would never have shown this interest. Now, thanks to our new books and hands-on supplies, they are researching electricity on their own. I even have a few students who want to be electricians or go into electricity related fields now. The setting in particular is hard for them to imagine, so we've been doing a lot of re-reading and drawing to help visualize the different locations in the story. \r\n\r\nAnother fun thing we did this week was make paper circuits to help understand how electricity works because the city in which this story takes place is struggling with electricity problems and resource scarcity. By building the circuits, students better understood the struggles facing this town. I think the book is inspiring a new wave of electricians and electrical engineers in my class! \r\n\r\nAs you can see by the pictures, we are also working on our comprehension and summary skills while reading through this book. It truly feels like a great culmination of all the comprehension skills we've worked on this year. Since receiving our supplies, we've made several sculptures with different mediums.\r\n\r\nI started with the building blocks. Students were adamant that Legos were not a sculpture material until we explored Lego artists online. They were amazed and had fun rethinking building bricks as an art medium. We discussed abstract sculptures and how to make a sculpture appear balanced. \r\n\r\nWith the clay, students learned to score and slip their pieces so they would hold together after drying. This skill will carry them into our next clay techniques as well as middle/high school ceramics. Students made clay tomten sculptures as holiday gifts.\r\n\r\nThe material my students enjoy the most so far is Model Magic. I showed them how this material can be dyed in a multitude of colors and how to affix other objects to both the wet and dry substrate for mixed media sculptures. They love how versatile this medium is!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we have materials with which to create for the rest of the school year. My students absolutely love the carpet, and I love how it brings us together for learning. \r\n\r\nWe used to do our opening and closing circles standing up around the desks in the room because my students didn't want to sit on the floor. The first day the carpet arrived, they circled up around the edges of the carpet. The carpet is huge, so amazingly, we all fit. Circle time feels more intimate now and students are quickly building relationships as a result. \r\n\r\nWe also use the carpet for direct instruction time. The carpet is in the front of the room, so students either sit on the rug or in chairs around the rug during instruction. Having the kids closer to me means I can monitor their attention better. Transitioning between the rug and their desks also gives my students a built in body break between activities. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, we use the rug as an alternative reading and work space. This is the students' favorite use. They enjoy spreading out with a book on the rug. They prefer doing small group interventions on the rug rather than at a table, and they love to work sitting next to their friends on the rug. \r\n\r\nThe carpet you helped donate has truly been a magical addition to our classroom.
