We successfully created an advocacy project using our buttons for our end of year reading unit project! Our final reading unit focused on threats to freshwater sources around the world. Students did research projects and wrote a final essay on what pollutes our water locally and what pollutes water around the world in other communities (in places like Australia, Angola, India and Ethiopia) and what people can do to prevent and reverse pollution! \r\n\r\nThey got to share their research in a reading celebration with our second grade classes and their families. As part of their final project, every student in the third grade made three buttons with messages and images advocating for clean water around the world. We sold each button for a dollar to families and students at our school and raised 124 dollars with our button sales! We got to paint hamburgers and flags and frogs and unicorns and speckled art onto beautifully smooth rocks all year long! \r\n\r\nWith the rocks that students saved for our school garden, we organized them outside of our school's entrance, so kids and families and community members will be able to enjoy their bright colors every day! They look especially good on rainy days, as the water brings out their brightness! The outdoor paint was perfect for this project, as the rocks have stood up to lots of different types of weather. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for funding this project. My students had a blast in our rocks art club this year - some even said it was their favorite part of third grade.
