They love using the games, reading the books, and being able to organize all their materials so easily. Several have become experts in chess and Scrabble! They have gotten practice using the dictionary to look up words for the games, and coaching each other on the rules. These have added a source of fun and 'not work' learning to our studies. \r\n\r\nEven more importantly, many students have developed interests in book series and specific topics to research. The Battleship game led to a conversation and short research on how battleships are used. Stone Soup, a cooperative game, has led to a new style of game playing where students engage less in competition and more in collaboration. Building social emotional skills in this way (which is fun, nonthreatening, and doesn't 'look' like learning) is ideal. \r\n\r\nOur new pouches have allowed students to take in more self-direction with responsibility for their belongings. They can keep track of their pencils, work, and other materials without vocal reminders. This adds to their executive functioning skills and gives them agency over their materials.
