Calculators are commonly used as a teaching tool across our country. They are able to perform large, quantitative calculations across big concepts in a quick amount of time (in statistics and exponential equations, as examples). Calculators also help students see the "big picture" through the lens of the concept we are learning. In particular, computing how interest on loans is calculated definitely helps students understand where their money is going... they make the big connection quickly (and in general are shocked)!
Students feel empowered once they learn how to properly work these complex calculators!
Though they are able to be used for general computations, they are also able to be used as modeling, calculating interest on loans, comparing pricing - the list goes on!
If adults still relied on computing by hand, many of the enormous gains we have made in the last decade would be lost. Part of preparing for our future lies with educating students on how to utilize the technology that is readily available as students.
