Many students are navigating exposure to nicotine, vaping, alcohol, and other substances at increasingly younger ages, and it is critical to provide them with accurate information and supportive guidance early on. These resources will allow me to create engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons and small group experiences that help students understand risks, build resilience, and develop the skills needed to make healthy, informed choices. In addition, they support a safe and welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help.\r\nThe materials from this project have played a key role in enhancing lessons and counseling sessions. Visual tools like the smoking, vaping, opioid, and alcohol flip charts will help break down complex topics into clear, relatable concepts for middle school students. Bulletin board charts and student learning guides have supported to reinforce key messages throughout the school, creating consistent exposure to prevention education. Sensory tools such as Calm Strips and sensory tubes, along with mindfulness cards and activity books, have given support to students in learning practical coping strategies that they can use in moments of stress or emotional overwhelm. The collection of books will provide opportunities for reflection, discussion, and connection, helping students better understand addiction, mental health, and the importance of self-care in a way that reduces stigma and builds empathy.\r\nWhen students are introduced to these materials, they are naturally drawn to the interactive and hands-on components, which has increased engagement and participation. These resources have and will continue to support future lessons, small groups, and individual sessions focused on topics like healthy decision-making, emotional regulation, and \"clear-minded living.\" Moving forward, students will have ongoing opportunities to apply what they learn through reflection activities, discussions, and school-wide messaging that reinforces positive choices. This project helps ensure that prevention education is not a one-time lesson, but a consistent and meaningful part of students' daily school experience.\r\nStudent feedback has been very positive, with many sharing that participating in hands-on activities helps them better understand the topics and gives them practical tools they can actually use in their daily lives.\r\n\r\nThank you for your help in making this all happen.","fullyFundedDate":1769638193001,"projectUrl":"project/positive-crossroads/10042652/","projectTitle":"Positive Crossroads","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Newman Crossroads","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3518181_orig.png?crop=267,267,x0,y11&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769372767818","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3518181"},{"teacherId":8271045,"projectId":9796947,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our Learning Center has become so much more than a room with furniture — it's now a calm, welcoming space where students can truly focus and feel supported. Since opening, we have already served more than 155 students, providing academic help, make-up opportunities for students with high absences, math support, English conversation practice for our multilingual learners, and quiet workspace for those who simply need a distraction-free environment.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating has made an immediate difference. When students first saw the new chairs and floor cushions, many commented on how \"calm\" and \"comfortable\" the space felt. In our student feedback form, 34% of the students shared that they come to the learning center for a comfortable place to work and that they are able to concentrate better and felt less stressed working in the Learning Center than in a traditional classroom setting. One student wrote that it they liked \"The calm and relaxing atmosphere and vibe.\"\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful shifts has been watching students complete assignments who don't typically do so. We've seen students stay focused for an entire period, ask thoughtful questions, and walk out with finished work in hand — sometimes for the first time in weeks. That sense of accomplishment is powerful. The seating creates an environment where students can settle in, regulate, and build the confidence to persist through challenging tasks.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and believing in their potential.
