For many students, play is one of the most natural and effective ways to learn. Having access to a variety of engaging toys will give students opportunities to explore, create, problem-solve, communicate, and build important skills while having fun.\r\n\r\nThese toys will provide students with hands-on learning experiences that encourage curiosity and imagination. Building toys, puzzles, games, pretend-play materials, and other interactive resources allow students to make choices, try new ideas, and learn from their experiences. Students can practice critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they figure out how to complete a puzzle, build a structure, follow game rules, or create something entirely of their own. These experiences help students develop confidence and persistence as they learn that it is okay to make mistakes and try again.\r\n\r\nDonated toys will also support social-emotional development. During group play, students learn how to share materials, take turns, communicate their ideas, listen to others, and work together toward a common goal. Board games and cooperative activities provide opportunities for students to practice patience, teamwork, sportsmanship, and respectful communication. Pretend play allows students to express themselves, explore different roles, and develop empathy by seeing situations from another person's perspective.\r\n\r\nThe toys will be especially valuable during before- and after-school hours when students benefit from activities that are both enjoyable and purposeful. They have been able to interact with peers using the materials. They were so excited to help open the package and see all the new items for their classroom. Students were able to use playdough to create letters, shapes, numbers, etc. They had so much fun quizzing each other on different types of animal stencils they used.\r\n\r\nA lot of our students are nonverbal, so this helped them enjoy interaction with peers. It allowed us the opportunity to practice sharing and taking turns with materials. Students were able to work on their hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. They were able to show us what they know as well as learn new ways to perform tasks. \r\n\r\nDuring our center time, we would sit down with a small group of students and have them work with different materials each day. Some days it would be only playdough and other days we would mix it up and have them rotate stations so that they could interact with different peers and materials. We would give them one \"free day\" a week to choose the activity they wanted to do and the materials they wanted to use and this allowed them to be completely creative. They get to experience color matching, naming colors, and love how the materials look on our light table.
