These new picture books and chapter books introduce essential skills—perspective‑taking, emotional awareness, and compassion—through characters who face challenges that feel both familiar and new to our students. As we read together, we pause to ask questions like \"How might this character feel right now?\" or \"What could we do to help in this situation?\" The books make these conversations natural, giving students concrete examples of empathy in action.\r\nIn our library, reading is an active, joyful experience. Students curl up on the carpet with books that finally reflect their languages, cultures, and lived experiences, while others excitedly choose stories that open windows into worlds beyond their own. During read‑alouds, discussions bloom organically—hands shoot up, students debate characters' choices, and even our quietest readers are finding their voices. Independent reading time has become a moment students look forward to all day.\r\nSome of the biggest smiles come from our newest arrivals—students who only recently joined our school from Central America. They beam when they find characters who look like them, speak like them, or share familiar traditions. One second grader proudly carried around a book all week, telling classmates, \"She's like me!\" Others have gravitated toward stories about kindness and helping others; teachers have already noticed them using phrases from the books—like \"I can help you\" or \"Are you okay?\"—in their daily interactions.\r\nYour generosity has created more than just a collection of books—you've helped build a haven of belonging, empathy, and possibility.
