These three pillars have not only shaped the tone of our classroom this year but also inspired our culminating SEL project, \"Love Letters to Myself.\" This project has given students the chance to deeply reflect on their emotional growth and the tools they've developed to handle real-life situations with confidence and care.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, including colorful journals, affirming images, and writing prompts, they were visibly excited. One student said, \"This looks like something real authors use,\" while another pointed out how much the images reminded her of herself. That kind of connection is priceless, it immediately made the curriculum feel more personal and inclusive. It also laid the groundwork for rich discussions, as students felt seen and validated. We just got the package, they love receiving packages, lol and we opened the box together and started using the materials immediately. We began by reflecting on their favorite SEL lessons and writing about how they used courage in group activities, showed empathy when helping classmates, or expressed gratitude to adults who support them daily.\r\n\r\nEach week, my students will focus on a specific CharacterStrong trait and explore how it has shown up in their lives. They will then write about those experiences in their journals and set goals tied to the lessons. For example, during a week focused on perseverance, students will write about how they didn't give up while learning a tough math skill or how they kept trying even when they didn't succeed the first time. These reflections will deepened their self-awareness and strengthened their ability to set meaningful personal goals.\r\n\r\nAs we move into the final weeks of school, we will be completing the last steps of our \"Love Letters to Myself\" project. Students will be reviewing their past entries and writing final letters to their future selves letters that celebrate their growth and outline how they plan to carry these social-emotional tools with them into 4th grade and beyond. Their journals will be personal toolkits, full of affirmations, reflections, and actionable steps that will help them navigate future challenges. They are learning that their emotions matter, that their voices are powerful, and that they can take what they've learned with them wherever they go.\r\n\r\nTo honor their hard work my students will have the opportunity to read aloud excerpts from their journals and affirm both themselves and their peers. It's our way of closing out the school year with intention and pride.\r\n\r\nThank you so much to Ripple and all who supported our project. Your generosity helped make this meaningful experience possible. Because of you, my students were given the tools to reflect, grow, and believe in their own potential, not just for today, but for their future as well.","fullyFundedDate":1746786932814,"projectUrl":"project/love-letters-to-myself/9310122/","projectTitle":"Love Letters to Myself","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bumpers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9338052"},{"teacherId":9338052,"projectId":9060704,"letterContent":"My third graders and I have been exploring how communities change over time, and we recently celebrated a culminating event in honor of Earth Day. One of our students even had their idea featured in the \"Let Us Give You a Reason Not to Litter\" campaign!\r\n\r\nFor students who learn best through listening and visuals, I used a Flocabulary video to teach about the origins of Earth Day and the importance of protecting our environment. This resource provided equitable access to content and reinforced learning through engaging videos and game-like assessments.\r\n\r\nDuring our Earth Day cleanup project, both my general education and special needs students worked side-by-side with community partners, making real-world connections through hands-on experience. Flocabulary served as the bridge, connecting sensory-rich, collaborative activities with classroom learning. Your thoughtful contribution has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of our young learners, and I want to take a moment to share just how much it has impacted our gym community.\r\n\r\nIn our physical education classes, staying hydrated is an essential part of learning healthy habits. Many of our students participate in high-energy activities every day—running, jumping, playing, and growing stronger together. Thanks to your donation, every student now has access to a clean, reusable water bottle, ensuring they can stay hydrated and healthy while participating fully in class. For some of our students, this simple item represents much more than just a bottle—it's a symbol of belonging, care, and support from someone who values their well-being.\r\n\r\nYour gift also aligns beautifully with our goal of promoting lifelong health and wellness. Having personal water bottles encourages students to take responsibility for their hydration, practice environmental stewardship by reducing single-use plastic waste, and understand the importance of caring for their bodies. It's wonderful to see students proudly carrying their bottles to class each day, filling them up before activities, and encouraging one another to take water breaks. This small but powerful shift has sparked conversations about healthy habits and sustainability, which are lessons that go far beyond the gym walls.\r\n\r\nYour generosity reminds our students that their community supports them—not just in academics, but in all aspects of their growth and development. When they see that someone took the time and resources to invest in their health, it helps them feel valued and motivated. You've shown them what kindness looks like in action, and that's a lesson they will remember long after this school year ends.\r\n\r\nPlease know that your contribution has had a lasting impact not only on our students' physical health but also on their sense of community. Every time they take a sip of water after a game of tag, a relay race, or a challenging fitness station, they are benefiting from your generosity.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my students, I extend our warmest thanks for supporting our physical education program. Your donation is a shining example of how one thoughtful act can ripple outward to touch many lives. We are so grateful for your partnership and for your commitment to helping our students develop healthy habits that will serve them for a lifetime.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your kindness and support. You've made a real difference in our gym, our school, and our students' lives.","fullyFundedDate":1705505307161,"projectUrl":"project/water-bottles/8109546/","projectTitle":"Water Bottles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sirota","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2756860"},{"teacherId":8891646,"projectId":8775995,"letterContent":"I am extremely grateful for the support to acquire soil for our outdoor garden project. This was one phase of a multi-step project. With these materials I was able to prepare the outdoor flower beds, Now students will be able to add plants to them in the spring. We have a large outdoor vegetable garden that our fantastic community partner assists with maintaining. This donation allowed us to expand the garden to include flowers. The students grow the seedlings in the classroom during the winter and early spring months, usually we send the plants home because we lack a place to plant them. We now have a space to plant several outdoor flowerbeds. \r\n\r\nThis space allows us to enhance our school curriculum with activities in an outdoor garden classroom that bring abstract concepts to life through active, hands-on learning. We use typical gardening tasks, such as planning, planting, caring and harvesting, to illustrate cultivation. Children are more engaged, more attentive and more motivated to learn. Our students are like many children raised in urban settings, they may have never seen seeds sprout. Through schools gardens, children experience rewards from plants and the process that brings them to pass. They learn to understand the natural growth of plants — from seeds to sprouts to flowers to fruits — and the impact that rain, drought and other forces of nature have on plant life. Our children learn firsthand the connection between nature, their own food supply, and the pollinators and other creatures their school garden ecosystem attracts and supports. Our students will now have the opportunity to design a garden with the plants they are growing. I am truly thankful for the support I have received to help our students experience the benefits of a school garden.","fullyFundedDate":1728940763367,"projectUrl":"project/soil-needed-for-steam-gardeners/8775995/","projectTitle":"SOIL needed for STEAM Gardeners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hill","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8891646_orig.jpg?crop=2033,2033,x118,y683&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673380846022","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-aj-hill"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5639","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":113,"numTeachers":8,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":94,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.6,"schoolId":5639,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jackie Robinson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jackie Robinson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/jackie-robinson-elementary-school/5639"}
