Instead of a clinical or unfamiliar environment, they are now entering a room that feels calm, comfortable, and supportive.\r\n\r\nStudents are using this space each day to meet with their therapists during the school day. The new resources help create an environment where they can focus, open up, and fully engage in their sessions. We've already seen students settle in more quickly and feel more at ease, which allows them to make the most of their time. For many, this space is becoming a place where they can build trust, process their experiences, and develop important coping and self-management skills.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, this room will continue to support students as they grow emotionally and socially. The welcoming environment allows therapists to do their work more effectively and ensures that students can access consistent support without leaving school. They were able to learn about the effects of single-use plastic in our oceans and in the world as a whole. These water bottles are not only a step in the right direction for sustainability, but they will also serve as a reminder to our youth that the planet is worth saving!\r\n\r\nOur first club meeting consisted of creating awareness about single-use plastic, and we watched a few videos to show the impact of single-use plastic. Students discussed possible long-term negative effects. During our second meeting, students read some information about how our oceans/animals that live in our oceans are impacted by single-use plastic. Students then began to plan how they would decorate their reusable water bottles. In our third and final meeting, students finally decorated their reusable water bottles! Students use the space for about 10 minutes at a time to reset, calm down, and return to class ready to learn. They are taking excellent care of the materials and exploring all of the options provided, with the coloring books and sand tray being particular favorites. This space has also given students a positive alternative if they cannot meet with a school counselor right away, allowing them to feel supported rather than waiting in frustration. Teachers have begun referring students to the Zen Den as well, which has helped prevent several students from being sent to In-School Suspension.\r\n\r\nWhen the Zen Den first opened, students were thrilled to have a calming, dedicated space just for them. Their faces lit up as they explored the materials, eager to try out every item in the area. Many expressed gratitude that the school had created a place where they could take a break when their emotions felt overwhelming. One student shared that the Zen Den helped them \"get back to class without feeling like I was in trouble.\" This excitement has turned into genuine care and responsibility; students are mindful of the space and respect it as a place of peace.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the Zen Den will continue to support our school's trauma-informed practices while giving students more opportunities to self-regulate. As part of our next steps, we plan to integrate mindfulness activities and calming strategies into classroom lessons, so students can transfer these skills beyond the Den. We also hope to expand materials that are in high demand, such as coloring resources and sensory tools, to keep the space fresh and engaging. After giving it some thought, we decided to narrow our message to \"Reduce One Use Plastic\" and offer students a place to come together, talk about why plastic is a problem, and what are some ways we can solve the problem. With donors like you, students receive a high quality aluminum water bottle that they decorate. This was a huge success!\r\n\r\nI plan to sponsor this club again this school year with a new partner, Ms. Abby Johnson.
