In our STEM logs/journals after students have writen and sketched what they have been working on they can move on to the next step. The next step is coloring their sketches. Students perfer to use pencils isntead of crayons or markers. \r\n\r\nStudents in Kindergarten -5th grade use color pencils in their STEM logs/journals. Before getting the colored pencil sharpeners students were forced to forget about colored pencils due to the fact that the colored pencils would break a regular pencil sharpener and we would be unable to sharpen colored pencils. When that happened students would do the least amount of sketching. In all honesty, they are not. They are great for bridge building and Tower building.\r\n\r\nRed building and tower building is one stem challenge that every grade level loves my students were very excited when the sets of straws arrived. They were ready to get started as soon as I took the straws \r\n\r\nAs students started to build their bridges, they were even more excited and when they were when the material right. No more need for tape no more need to try and make the tape work on the straws no more need to cut different sizes of tape. The straws arrived with connectors which made students bridge building challenges that much easier for them and allowed them to have more time instead of cutting and making the tape work. As supplies started coming in through generous donations don't need to be away to keep them safe and use them here after year. The utility cards with multiple drawers was the answer.\r\n\r\nStudent is no longer needed to jump up or attempt to stand on a chair to reach materials on high bookshelves. All the stem material is nicely located in the drawers of the well made utility cards. Each of the cards has been labeled for it is easy access for each and every student.\r\n\r\nWhen it comes time to do a STEM challenge independently, students are able to walk over to one of the utility carts read the label and pull out the material that they need. No more hunting and wasting time no more finding damaged or ruined.STEM material material. After students understood their task they got down to business.\r\n\r\nIn our STEM classrooms students can work at a table or on the floor to plan and build their design. They kept trying to guess what was in the box. Finally after making them wait long enough the box was opened and I shared with students what was in the box and how they were going to be used. They were very intrigued since they never heard of pocket microscopes until the day the box was opened. Once they realized what they were used for they were ready to put them to use. \r\n\r\nWe headed outside and around our school to start discovering interesting things on our schools campus. Students were excited to each have their own pocket microscope to use. After we were done with the first use they asked to use them again over the next few days. My students interest in discovering new things was so wonderful to see. Thank you so very much for you generosity. I am so grateful for the generosity of those that supported me in my first year as a school psychologist. The intention of this project was to provide my students with an inviting space and lots of treats for them when they are testing, as I often notice that my relatively brief interactions can be stressful for those who get anxiety when testing. That, or there are often students I work with who need a little extra incentives to put forth their best effort. \r\n\r\nMostly, my students have loved to grab a quick treat before/after/during a testing session, like Cheez-its or fruit snacks! They're always very appreciative that I have the snacks ready for them when they need it. I have found it easy to build rapport with my students when we share a brief moment of respite with a snack during long testing sessions.
