One specific moment that stood out was during small group instruction. A student who typically struggles to remain seated and engaged was able to use a fidget tool and a wiggle cushion while working. With those supports, they stayed with the activity longer, participated in discussion, and completed their task with confidence. It was a small adjustment that made a big difference.\r\n\r\nWhen students were first introduced to the materials, their excitement was immediate. They were curious, eager to explore, and quickly began asking questions about how and when they could use each item. More importantly, they began to understand that these tools are here to help them feel calm and ready to learn, not just something to play with. It opened up conversations about self-regulation and recognizing what their bodies need.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are continuing to build structured opportunities for students to use these tools appropriately throughout the day. Our next steps include teaching students how to independently choose the tools that best support them during different activities, such as transitions, independent work, and group lessons. We are also incorporating simple lessons on identifying emotions and matching them with strategies, helping students become more aware of their needs and more confident in managing them.\r\n\r\nThanks to this project, we are creating a classroom environment where students feel supported, regulated, and ready to learn each day.","fullyFundedDate":1768535133791,"projectUrl":"project/calm-bodies-focused-minds/10009678/","projectTitle":"Calm Bodies, Focused Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Solorio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8950907_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725731861881","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8950907"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65801","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":717,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":36,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"21.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":90.9,"schoolId":65801,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Independence Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Independence Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/rosedale-union-school-district/independence-elementary-school/65801"}
