We also now have shared language to communicate with each other in order to make the classroom run more smoothly. For example, on the first day we read the book \"My Brain is a Racecar,\" and then we had a conversation about how so many of our brains love to stay on track and focus on one task, but how sudden noises and disruptions can make us feel like our car is spinning out of control. Since then, I have had students ask to work in a quiet space because \"their race car is off track.\" I have also been able to use this vocabulary when I have had students blurting out and calling my name for attention. All I have to say is \"my racecar is working on x,\" and suddenly the students understand the need for uninterrupted focus. \r\nThat is only one example of how these read a-louds and brain discussions has transformed my room. I started it in the middle of my year and was so floored by the immediate progress. Engagement has never been better!\r\n\r\nThe math games (noodlers and the math dominoes) have been a huge hit with my students who are ready for a challenge during math game time. They love getting to strategize the use of their pieces and challenge themselves with difficult word problems. When I look around the room, I see all of their feet silently fidgeting while they focus on their work. Having the extra \"wiggle room\" really seems to be helping them with their hard work! \r\n\r\nThe students also love the noise cancelling ear muffs. I have a lot of students who are easily distracted by noises in the classroom and these earmuffs are really helping them learn how to focus on what's important.\r\n\r\nOf course, they all love the headphones! Having a brand new pair of headphones is a luxury that many of them have not yet had in school.
