When the tables, stools, and rugs first arrived, two former students volunteered to carry the heavy boxes to my room. This gave me a chance to reconnect with them, and they felt good about helping. \r\nI was then able to use the assembly of the tables and stools to build a relationship with a student who, in previous years, has really struggled with school and authority. He asked to help build the furniture during his free time. I believe this relationship helped keep him engaged and present the first weeks of school. \r\nMiddle schoolers need a chance to practice making choices and social skills. The optional seating helps with these skills. Students are able to stand during class, move around if needed, and make the best choice about where to sit and who to work with.
