Before, we had to share a small set of laptops, which meant students had to take turns or work on paper. Now, with expanded access, everyone can jump right into the Modern Classroom Model. Instead of me standing at the board teaching whole class lessons where some kids get bored and others get lost, students use their laptops to watch short lesson videos at their own speed. They can pause, rewind, and take notes whenever they need to. Because the Chromebooks handle the main lesson, I can spend almost the whole class moving around the room, helping students one on one or working with small groups who need extra support.\r\n\r\nWhat gets the students most excited is having full, continuous access to their own work. On their Chromebooks, they can log on, look at our goal board, and see exactly what skill they are working on and what comes next. Math does not feel like a rush anymore. After practicing a skill, they take a quick computer check to see if they have got it down. If they do, they move on to the next topic. If they make mistakes, they review the problem, make corrections, and try again until they get it right. They love seeing their own progress in real time instead of having to wait to share a device or grade a paper test.\r\n\r\nThis expanded access has been amazing for students who used to get nervous or frustrated in math class. For example, one student who used to freeze up during quick lectures and wait for a turn on the computer has totally turned things around. Having their own Chromebook every day lets them rewatch explanations as many times as they want without feeling embarrassed or rushed. While other kids work on their laptops, this student gets quiet, individual help from me to build up their skills. Now, they are passing their skill checks on their own and feeling proud of their work.
