When I unveiled the table, the students' eyes widened and several of them literally gasped. One student whispered, \"Is that for us?\" Within minutes, they were carefully exploring the materials, scooping, pouring, and working together with huge smiles on their faces.\r\n\r\n How We're Using the Sensory Table\r\n\r\nWe use the sensory table every day during our literacy and math centers. Recently, we filled it with colored rice and hid sight word cards inside. Students searched for the words, read them aloud, and wrote them on mini whiteboards. What could have been simple word practice turned into an engaging treasure hunt! Even my most hesitant readers were eager to participate.\r\n\r\nIn math, we've used the table with measuring cups, funnels, and small containers. Students are exploring concepts like full/empty, more/less, and measurement — all while strengthening fine motor skills and practicing cooperation. I've seen students naturally take turns, problem-solve together, and use new vocabulary in ways that feel authentic and joyful.\r\n\r\nStudent Reactions\r\n\r\nThe sensory table has been especially powerful for students who need extra sensory input or who struggle to stay engaged during traditional activities. I've watched children who typically find it difficult to focus remain calm and fully involved for extended periods of time. It has become a safe, regulating space where they can learn through hands-on exploration.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out: a student who rarely participates in group discussions excitedly called me over to show how they had sorted objects by size without being prompted. The pride on their face was priceless.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be using the sensory table to support our science unit on habitats. Students will create mini environments (like deserts and oceans) using sand, water beads, and small animal figures. They'll explore how different animals survive in different conditions, and we'll incorporate vocabulary, writing, and storytelling into the experience.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than provide a piece of classroom furniture — it has created opportunities for collaboration, creativity, language development, and joyful learning every single day.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students a space where curiosity leads the way. Your generosity is making a lasting difference.","fullyFundedDate":1771882238857,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-discovery-building-bright-mind/10115429/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Discovery: Building Bright Minds Through Sensory Play","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Freel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5486916_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1771130344688","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kellyfr"},{"teacherId":1491245,"projectId":9696837,"letterContent":"Thank you very much for your support and donations toward my project. I am GLAD trained and this is a specific training for teachers that have multilingual learners in their classrooms. These are specific strategies designed for these diverse and unique learners. The foundation of every strategy is built upon having colored pictures. The black and white printers that we have access to do not help students understand the meaning of words. Most of the time a black and white picture is hard to even figure out what the picture is of. Please look at the pictures to you can see how valuable colored pictures are to their learning and understanding of language.
