Many of them had seen chess before but had never actually played, so the materials instantly sparked interest. The first day we introduced the boards, students gathered around the tables eager to learn the rules and understand how each piece moves. Their reactions were a mix of excitement, curiosity, and determination to learn something new.\r\n\r\nWe are using the chess boards as a tool to build community while also strengthening students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Students work in pairs and small groups, which encourages collaboration, patience, and respectful competition. One memorable classroom moment occurred when a student who had been quietly observing suddenly recognized a strategy and successfully executed their first checkmate. The entire table celebrated the moment, which reinforced how supportive and engaged the learning environment has become.\r\n\r\nIn addition to learning how to play chess, students are also discussing strategy and reflecting on their choices during the game. After each match, they talk about what worked, what they would do differently next time, and how planning ahead can change the outcome of a game. These conversations naturally connect to broader classroom lessons about perseverance, thoughtful decision-making, and learning from mistakes.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students include exploring more advanced strategies and participating in friendly classroom tournaments. We are also beginning to integrate chess into lessons about logic, planning, and strategic thinking. Students will continue practicing, analyzing their games, and learning how to think several moves ahead. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, these chess boards are not just game materials—they are tools that help students grow academically, socially, and intellectually.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly grateful for your support in helping make these meaningful learning experiences possible.","fullyFundedDate":1764649926656,"projectUrl":"project/chess-n-chill/9865331/","projectTitle":"Chess N Chill","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Brown","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9899941"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27246","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":383,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":13,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":88.5,"schoolId":27246,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about High School of Applied Communications on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"High School of Applied Communications","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/hs-of-applied-communications/27246"}
