The entire goal of having my comic book club was to give my students a peaceful place during the day to engage in independent reading. I do not tell my students what to read here, they make the choices on their own. If they ask me for a recommendation, I do not hesitate to give them one. Some days, they may only read a few pages, but they often fly through the comics they choose. They are learning to process imagery and written word together, skills that will be invaluable in our digital age as they will only be exposed more and more to this sort of thing.\r\n\r\nI have several students who are finding a new appreciation for the medium as well as several of my ENL students who can read and appreciate the comics in an attempt to improve their reading comprehension in English. Overall, the comics club has become a success already, and it is entirely due to your generous contributions. I cannot thank you all enough.","fullyFundedDate":1729131037776,"projectUrl":"project/long-live-comics-books-for-the-school-c/8870379/","projectTitle":"Long Live Comics: Books for the School Comic Club!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Nissen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6880386_orig.jpg?crop=1511,1511,x0,y251&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728526841686","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6880386"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_228","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":494,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":85,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":58.3,"schoolId":228,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about High School for Law & Public Service on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"High School for Law & Public Service","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/hs-law-public-service/228"}
