The water movement, light reflection, and quiet focus provide a low-demand sensory experience. Watching the fish swim back and forth activates smooth pursuit eye movements, which can calm the brain and reduce emotional intensity. The student is also guided through calming strategies and informed that they may return to instruction when they feel ready. This teaches self-regulation. I am not removing them as punishment — I am teaching them how to calm down and return ready to learn. The visual tracking of the fish supports emotional regulation and helps reduce undesired behaviors. When they track the fish, their brain shifts from emotional processing to visual processing and attention control — helping them \"forget\" the trigger.
