Two first grade boys were very excited to be able to continue reading the Super Rabbit Boy series. We added more volumes of the popular Kirby and Animal Crossing manga. This year, the book Squire and Knight is a kids choice state award nominee. Students were able to continue reading the series with the purchase of the second one. A student asked if there was a third one. This isn't a hole in our collection. There are so many books I wish I could put into the hands of students. Unfortunately, the library's budget limits the amount of books we are able to add in a year. Students are able to get more books they are excited about into their hands. \r\n\r\nStudents were especially excited to read the books in The Deadliest series to read about the deadliest sea creatures and the deadliest insects. A fourth grade girl was very excited to read the book Puffins and learn more about puffins. The book A Fishboy Named Sashimi has become a new graphic novel favorite. So many of our students are interested in learning about history. Our library collection was in desperate need of updating books on different historical topics. With your help, we were able to buy new, relevant, and engaging books covering a range of historical topics. \r\n\r\nAfter they learn more about the great civilizations of Peru, students can now learn more with books purchased for this project. Our teacher book club this month is looking at books about World War II. We will be looking at and discussing two books purchased for this project. I book-talked the book, \"The Danger Files: Real Life Disasters,\" students were excited that it \"was like all the I Survived books in one.\" \r\n\r\nLearning about history is incredibly important. Now when students ask if we have any \"anime books,\" I have a place to direct them. I included a before and after photo. The before photo was taken after I set up the section. The after photo was taken a couple of weeks ago. As you can tell, the new Manga books do not stay on the shelf before long before they are checked out. The books have been in the collection for about two months. The Manga titles have been checked out 166 times in those two months. \r\n\r\nThe books have been enjoyed by a variety of grade levels. Younger students are excited to see familiar characters, such as Kirby and Mario. By fifth grade, students become less interested in checking out books from the library. They have read all the interesting books in the library (or at least they think they have). Fifth graders were very excited with the addition of these titles. At the beginning of the year, one fifth grader requested more Animal Crossing Manga in the library. He was very excited when I told him we got more. Another fifth grader found a new favorite book series in Little Witch Academia. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donation. Already students have used the Plus Plus blocks, made buttons, created Shrinky Dinks, and made designs with Perler beads. They have been very excited to try out these new activities. Some were familiar with these projects but many were not. Getting these materials allowed for students to express their creativity and create, frequently in a new way. During Library, students were able to create projects with the Plus Plus blocks. Fifth graders came to Makerspace Club during recess and made Shrinky Dinks. I held a Dog Man release party where button making was a big hit. I'm excited to use these materials more with students and I know they will also be excited. \r\n\r\nI have some next steps in mind. I had a couple of students test out the Perler beads but I have not had the chance to have more students try it out. I'm looking forward to having students create their own designs. I'm hoping to do button making with fourth grade soon. I would also like to create buttons as brag tags, such as reading different genres. In March, students who participated with vote in the Minnesota Youth Reading Awards.
