Having access to high-interest books they were genuinely excited about motivated even my most reluctant readers to pick up a book and keep reading. Students eagerly talked about the stories, recommended books to one another, and asked for more time to read.\r\n\r\nI have three students who previously did not enjoy reading and consistently struggled to reach their weekly Accelerated Reading goals. Since adding the Dork Diaries series and The Last Kids on Earth series to our classroom library, those same students have reached their AR goals each week. They are excited to read, proud of their progress, and now choose reading during free time.\r\n\r\nBecause the books were engaging and at their reading levels, students were able to successfully complete AR quizzes and reach their goals with confidence. Meeting those goals helped build their self-esteem as readers and showed them that reading can be both fun and rewarding.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books helped instill a love of reading that goes beyond one program or goal. Students are exploring new books and genres, trying new authors, and seeing themselves as readers. Thanks to this project, reading became something they want to do, not just something they have to do, and that impact will carry with them far beyond our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1766764495090,"projectUrl":"project/books-open-doors-help-our-5th-graders/9719076/","projectTitle":"Books Open Doors — Help Our 5th Graders Step Through","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Meadows","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8477352_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1690661745034","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8477352"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39216","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":239,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":89,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":59.7,"schoolId":39216,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hollywood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hollywood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/west-virginia/raleigh-county-school-district/hollywood-elementary-school/39216"}
