We read the novel this spring in our 8th Grade ELA classes at Hobbton Middle School. If not for your generosity, our students would never have been able to experience the joy of losing themselves in a novel that kept them on the edge of their seat throughout the story. \r\n The Hunger Games novel was a huge success with our students! Many have called it their favorite novel that we've read together this year. Several students have already bought or borrowed the next novel in the series, Catching Fire, to read independently so they can learn what happens next in Katniss's story. Several students who had already watched the movie or went on to watch the movie because we were reading it in class told me the book was way better because of the details and worldbuilding that were cut out of the movie (which made my teacher heart so happy). \r\n In class, student engagement increased while reading this novel as the students were interested and invested in what was happening. They tried to put themselves into Katniss's shoes, arguing over what they would or wouldn't do. They would ask about the world of Panem and how it functioned as they immersed themselves in the novel. My students actually groaned out loud when the bell rang at the end of each class because they wanted to read on. That is no small feat in middle school!\r\n They cheered for Katniss when she shot the arrow at the gamemakers, were angry at Peeta for his seeming betrayal, were teary eyed when Rue died, giggled at the star-crossed lovers story, horrified when they thought Katniss and/or Peeta would die at the end of the Games, and jubilant when they won. Because of their interest and investment, they were eager and able to answer questions of varying complexity and engage in activities such as drawing important scenes from chapters and explaining why the scenes were important. We were able to teach so many standards through the use of these novels which led to deep discussions and the students being able to critically think through the motivations of a character's actions. These novels made a lasting impression on the students and it's something they will talk about with their peers for years to come.
