While many people think of classroom furniture as simply a place to sit, these desks have helped create opportunities for movement, choice, and engagement throughout the school day. Students use them during independent work, small-group instruction, partner activities, reading, writing, and project-based learning. Their portability makes it easy for teachers to adapt learning spaces to meet the needs of different lessons and different learners. As the desks were shared among multiple classrooms and grade levels, countless students benefited from having a comfortable and flexible workspace that supported both focus and collaboration.\r\n\r\nWhat students love most is the sense of ownership and independence these desks provide. Teachers are constantly tying and retying shoes. We have had classrooms coming to the Library not only to check books but to use our fabulous new maker spaces. One of our new spaces is the Shoe tying space. Our students were curious at first and we had older students showing the little ones how to tie the shoes. Some of the older students started a competition, who can lace and tie the shoe the fastest. \r\n\r\nBy using wooden practice shoes it is an effective way to help young students learn how to tie their shoes. These durable, oversized models give children a stable, easy-to-see surface to practice on, reducing frustration and allowing them to focus on the steps of looping, crossing, and pulling. Because the shoes stay in place and the laces are often thicker, students can develop confidence and muscle memory before transitioning to their own footwear.
