During our first session of Board Game Club, we taught the older kids how to play many of the classic board games that we learned as kids, but that they had never seen before. We also taught them some newer card games. They learned how to play cooperatively, how to congratulate each other on wins, and how to lose a match gracefully. For session 2, the older kids then came and taught our younger kids how to play the games they'd learned in session one. It was so exciting to see our older kids step up and become leaders for the Littles. The students get so excited when a new package comes with new art supplies, it really is so exciting and they love to see what has come for the classroom. The students are using the new art supplies to make very fun projects in the art room.\r\nThe students used chalk pastels as part of their Lunar New Year art including a custom lantern mixed media painting and paint markers. Having access to these high quality art supplies really makes a difference in the outcome of their projects including brightness of colors and integrity of the paper.\r\nThe students learned about the Great Race and the significance of the lanterns in celebrating Lunar New Year. They had a great time designing their lanterns and painting the sunset with cool colors.\r\nWe use the paint markers in an on going manner as they are a special art supply they can earn and use for special projects including painting on our classroom furniture. Using the paint markers is very special to the students they are so excited when they get to use them and are very careful when they put them away so they continue to have them as an art supply. They will also be able to build furniture that can support Goldilocks' weight—sparking laughter, creativity, and real problem-solving skills. These projects engage both imagination-driven learners and budding scientists, allowing them to explore stories in deeper, hands-on ways.\r\n\r\nThe kits have also opened a new opportunity: we're connecting with local engineers who we hope to invite into the classroom to present and guide us in using our STEM resources. With our new art supplies we are able to use bright vibrant colors to elevate creations and experiment with new tools and mediums.\r\nCurrently we are learning about radial symmetry in art and making mixed media projects that illustrate this art element. Students noticed it right away when they came for library in the first week that it was set up. I heard gasps, comments like, \"Oooooh, we have a puppet theater?! Can we use it today?\" \r\n\r\nIn the time that the puppet theater has been available to students, they have used it in several different ways. One student, unprompted by me, had her chosen puppet \"reading\" from the book she had just checked out. Her classmates had gathered as an audience on the tiered seating I put in the theater area. What a great way to practice oral reading fluency! We have had solo puppet shows as well as duos entertaining their classmates. By using the puppet theater, our multilingual learners have had a non-threatening opportunity to practice their English. \r\n\r\nWe recently had our monthly Super Saturday at the Library event for families. Not only did students utilize the puppet theater, but younger siblings did as well.
