It has been so exciting to begin using the books with my students and find creative ways to connect literacy and social-emotional learning to movement.\r\n\r\nAs a PE teacher, I know that my students often see me in a very different setting than they see their classroom teachers. They know me as the teacher who gets them moving, teaches them skills, plays games with them, and encourages them to challenge themselves physically. These books have given me another opportunity to connect with my students and allow them to see a different side of me.\r\n\r\nWe are just beginning our school year, and we have already read three of the books with my students. After reading each story, I have created activities and movement experiences that help students make connections to the characters, emotions, and lessons within the book. Instead of simply talking about social-emotional concepts, students get to experience them through movement, discussion, reflection, and play.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students. Your generosity has provided resources that will be used again and again throughout the school year. Our class has been able to explore in more meaningful ways with the tools that have been funded with this project. When our first graders first saw the STEM supplies they were over whelmed with joy and excitement. They could not wait to get their hands on the materials and start exploring. Our next steps are to engage students in meaningful conversations on how to build and explore with our tools rather than just imaginative exploration.
