Our librarian laminated the book covers so that your donation will better withstand wear and tear from students carrying the books in their backpacks. She also added barcodes to ensure that I will be able to get all of the books returned before school is out at the end of the month. I am expecting that these extra safeguards will mean that the books you donated will last much longer than paperbacks usually do with students. \r\n\r\nRight now, students are halfway through their four-week-long Book Club assignment. Many groups chose books that you donated; I included pictures of some of those books in use. Students are reading a quarter of their books per week and taking notes on discussion points in preparation for their Friday book club meetings. Last Friday, as I listened to students talking about the books they were reading, I heard the group reading the memoir Solito discussing with appreciation the way that the author includes Spanish in the text. This particular group is mostly made up of students whose first language is Spanish, and so while they are reading a text in English, they like that they have language in common with the author. Another group reading Where Sleeping Girls Lie, a mystery, was excitedly discussing their predictions about what might happen in the next section of the book. \r\n\r\nI am looking forward to hearing what these groups have to say when they meet again tomorrow, but what we have all especially appreciated in the short time students have had the books is that each group was able to choose something that they genuinely have an interest in, whether it's because they felt they might find the characters relatable or that they just usually like books in that genre. They are invested in the books they chose, and their animated conversations are a joy to witness. \r\n\r\nStudents who are not in the \"book club\" classes are now also checking out some of the books that had not been chosen by a group. One of my more voracious readers chose All My Rage this week and said that she is surprised she's never heard of it because it's so good.\r\n\r\nThank you again, so much, for providing my students with so many great titles.
